I haven't tried one for the tuba, but I have tried them for trumpet and for euphonium. They have a very different feel than metal (I find them comfortable), and I think a slightly different sound. Lips don't slide around as easily on them as they do on metal. I actually prefer using the Lexan trumpet mouthpiece to metal, but the tone is different. I would say that it is brighter and somewhat more hollow sounding. I don't think I would use one as a primary mouthpiece, but they are a good thing to have around for cold weather playing, and for something lightweight and interesting. Since they don't cost much, I think they are worth the money.
