Everyone has problems with controlling "tone". That is the main reason we practice.

If you approach these pitches from a crescendo (in an exercise of sorts), you can try to keep the sound nearly the same as the volume increases. If you expect "no edge whatsoever" at your top volume level, I don't think you'll succeed.

Sometimes, when practicing very loud-low stuff, I become dissatisfied with my sound..."too edgy". Quite often, it's because my bell is only about 3 feet away from the 8-foot ceiling. When I play just the same way (sounding "too edgy" when bounced off the ceiling just overhead) and point the bell sideways across the room (long room - about 35 feet), the sound is fine.
