It is possible that the edginess is due to air speed. I have owned 3 different F tubas and each required a different approach to the low range. My first F (Yamaha 822) liked fast direct air in the low range, my current F (MW 45S) likes lots of slow warm air.

That being said, As much success as I may have in the basement on my F tuba, it will not ever sound the same as on a full sized contrabus, especially when playing at loud dynamic levels. The sound may be just as loud, just as clear, but not as rich.
