That may be his biggest problem. As a late-bloomer myself (not having had problems with completing assignments, but STILL having problems with authority) I would proffer the suggestion that he may not bloom "on time" as you desire. But he may bloom very well nonetheless, at a somewhat later age than the usual. Your desire to see that he has a broad background is commendable.
