1) You can try having a loop or other extention mounted to the slides you want to use,
one that you can reach from over the top.
2) Your 188 probably has a thumb link to the 5th valve. If it does, replace it with a paddle on your 5th valve so you use your left index finger for 5, then have a kicker for 1st valve put where the old thumb paddle was, and if your 5th valve is the long one ("equals" 2-3) you can put another thumb-actuated kicker there for your left thumb.
Robb Stewart in Pasadena (?) has done this work for a lot of folks in the L.A. area over the years.
