The tuba is mostly an accompaniment or color instrument. In comparison to trumpet, horn or just about any other popular wind instrument, there's not a lot of solo music for it.

Sure, many (if not most) players play music on their instrument, but it's mostly as part of practice--does anyone outside of another tuba player really prefer hearing a solo work for violin played on tuba? Outside of the novelty aspect, that is.

Even the RVW tuba concerto isn't widely known outside of low brass circles and is probably viewed by most as being of the same genre as his concerto for vibraphone. Had Vaughan Williams lived another 20 years, I'm sure he would've come out with a concerto for banjo...
