In the '70's the school was attracting and subsequently sending back out into the world extraordinary crops of commercial (jazz, etc.) musicians. In those days, the concert band sounded fine but the orchestra (string) program was weak. There have been a lot of changes over the years. The string program is much stronger, and the concert band is quite holding its own, but the days of four professional-sounding "big bands" at the school are long gone. Perhaps this program will eventually redevelop as well. Parenthetically, I'm also impressed with the "fretted instrument" studios and piano studios.

Intentionally making no remarks about those who were in charge in the past, I have a lot of hope for the new department head.

No, it is no conservatory, but things are moving very quickly in a positive direction...and Mr. Mueller is part of the energy that is moving things that way.
