I don't believe the original post was intended to bash band directors. It seems to be one that reflects a fairly typical attitude of students these days. If something doesn't seem to mesh well with other known facts, the default setting is to question the band director. In fact, it may be that questioning is only part of it. What may be happen is that the director is assumed to be wrong by the modern student.
Even though I don't dwell much on this phenomena, I do find it to be very annoying. I believe this has changed considerably since I was in middle school and high school. I pretty much believed ANYTHING my band director told me about playing an instrument. Now, years later, I don't regret this even though it turns out he was right only about 99.9% of the time.
