A mini disc recorder and mic is an excellent way to record yourself. Many people have used this setup for past 1st round competition recordings. I, along with several of my college buddies, have used an audio technica AT-22 microphone and a Sony ECM-MS957 microphone with MD and been pleased with the results. If you are just looking to record practice sessions, a mic from an electronics store would probably be fine. Just make sure that you purchase a stereo mic (i.e. not mono) or purchase a mono to stereo plug adapter in addition to a mono mic. Hope this helps.
