I played Estancia in a youth symphony some 28 (ouch!) years ago. The percussion section came from the same school, and had a very long drive to the rehearsal site, so they quit. We low brassers were commissioned as percussionists on the spot.
Tenor drum, triangle, and gong for me. Now THAT was a hard gig.
