Though I've known to have done some case reupholstery, it hasn't occurred without swearing and a glue mishap or two...I just avoid it...not on instruments I'm selling nor for others.
I did do a complete "redo" of one of my own wood tuba cases about five years ago...' really did a great job, and was proud of myself when done...' took more time than it would have taken to earn the money to buy a new one...never again.
The serial number is no problem whatsoever.
