My 10th grade history teacher turned his class on to Jean Shepherd. From then on, I also was hooked on WOR New York (although I remember it airing 9:15-10:00 p.m.), even when reception in the Philadelphia area was questionable.
In addition to the "Halftime Sousaphone" episode, there was another program in which Shep said that the horn that he played in school was a 4-valve BBb sousaphone! He "argued" with the producer over that one.
