3V used Boosey Imperial compensating BBb tubas (or their Besson equivalent) can often be found for $1000 or less. Built like tanks with the compensating hardware built in to (theoretically) play most notes in tune, it's an often-overlooked but good alternative for those who don't need the extension below low E. Just remember to hacksaw off the "ball breaker" on the bottom.
When you're tired of playing it, you can use it as a boat anchor.
