Well, brass banding doesn't have to be competitive. When our band was first forming, someone asked the director about competitions. He came out strongly against it--he'd spent part of his career directing high-school band in Texas. He lamented that he was always preparing students for competitions and not teaching music. He's a retired collegiate band director and he's had his fill of competing, which is okay for everyone in the band.

A fair number of charts on our list for this season are, in fact, "test pieces" from the past amd are very challenging, but they're also good music. That's a good thing, because it even keeps non-competing bands like ours on its collective toes.

For me, brass banding's lots more fun than playing in the standard American "concert band", if for nothing else than there's some really good original music that has real demands on the players.
