I have put together many "pick-up" bands and other ensembles. There was one particular trumpet played that I always called first for pay gigs. This guy was a good player, although not the best in the area. I called him first because he was good enough and, more importantly, he was really polite. After the first time I hired him, he sent a thank you card. I was definitely swayed by that 50 cent card. Once you start making contacts, the return call will soon follow.
