I think that Berlioz would have used the serpent instread of the the ophicleide if he were looking for that liturgical connection to the plainsong root of the "Dies Irae". It is my understanding that the serpent is historically associated with accompniment of chant not the ophicleide. I have to seance with him to find out for sure.
