There are 2 main tuning slides for the VMI (F Schmidt) 2301. The F Schmidts come with the longer slide. The VMIs, I think, must be ordered with the longer slide. Perhaps the one you played had the shorter slide and if warm, may be hard to bring it down to A=440.
In my specific horn, even with the lomger slide, I have difficulty getting the F in tune. Tends to be sharp, but I think a lot of that has to do with me.
