Sheet brass is not like steel autobody parts.

Automotive sheet metal doors and fenders are formed by stamping dies under enormous pressure and contain energy stored as internal stresses, much like flat springs. A simple dent is the result of external energy being absorbed and deforming the sheet steel. Releasing those particular "oil can pop" dents can be done if the steel has not been pushed beyond its yield point. Old-design oil cans have a pop-style bottom, kind of like the cricket clickers children play with.

On the other hand, sheet brass rarely will receive a simple "oil can pop" dent, but instead is deformed beyond its yield point and has to be worked carefully to regain a smooth contour and surface.
