I completely concur Mr. Denney, scales are as important to music as they are to a snake's back. I am at the point in my Doctorate Degree that I am planning for my final recital. After reading this post I'm thinking that it would benefit the youth of the music field for me to do an "all-scale" DMA recital. It would include excerpts from the Arbans, Pares, Clarke, and the famed Milt Stevens method. I think 50 minutes of nothing but scales would be a very powerful program. It would serve as a testament to the tremendous impact of diatonicism on western music and the repertoire of Tuba and Euphonium. Thank you to the original poster for shedding light on an often ill-attended issue that all musicians share.
Iku,
Derek
