After using rubber shelf lining (like Ken Sloan suggested) for several years with about 4-5 different horns, I STILL found myself fighting with my tuba. (My gut is probably the real cause) Back when I was in high school I purchased a DEG tuba rest that I used for a little while and then put it in storage for a few years. Just this past week I dug out the stand and found that it was in need of some simple repairs. (Nothing a few screws, washers and some tape couldn't fix) After jerry-rigging...ahem...I mean...after repairing the stand, it was good as new. I tested it out immediately after it was fixed. It made playing my tuba 100000 times easier. I no longer have to fight with the weight, balance and position of the tuba. I just set the stand to the proper height, according to the given chair, and I am good to go.

I know you don't want to use a stand, but it really is worth trying.

My $0.02
