In all things, moderation. There is a balance between fundamentals, drill, reading, entertainment, rehearsal for performance, and performance. Even in middle school.

The seating test for my junior high-school band was playing five major scales in one octave and their arpeggios--Bb, Eb, F, D, and C--and a chromatic scale over the entire player's range.

Knowing some fundamentals provides the basis for future enjoyment of music beyond school, especially for those who can't afford lessons and who won't study it after high school.
