Those valve guides drive me crazy! Most beginner euph players don't curve their fingers on the keys the way one is supposed to, so I made all of my beginners unscrew the buttons and play with just the valve stems. They had to keep their fingers curved in order to make the valves go down. Once we did that for a few weeks, it became a habit and we put the buttons back on. That helped prevent the abnormal wear on the valve guides (but they still wear out too fast). I'd rather hear the clunky metal ones than have to put up with stuck valves and constant oiling and adjusting.
