We used a Miraphone BBb contrabass in trombone ensemble when I was in college. A tuba player was enlisted to play it, and I messed around with it a considerable amount. The tone was excellent, and its low range was every bit as easy as a big tuba. It wasn't particularly stuffy; it was a '70's instrument, and I'm guessing that it was the bigger bore instrument.

The real problem was that its intonation was almost impossible to control. I've never seen anything like it before or since. It took an iron lip to play it in tune because notes wouldn't play in pitch from one note to the next; even first position notes would slide all over the place. The guy who played the horn most of the time finally got it under control, but it was a constant struggle.
