I find the body bow cut drastic.
When I hunted for a good Eb tuba 5 years ago, I tried a 983. The dealer said that this model could only be played with the Denis Wick #3L, if it should not be too flat over all of the range.
I found the #3 limiting to the 983 and asked for a #1L, which worked much better. And could still play in A=443.
So unless all of his playing aspects are settled, I would suggest the original poster to have his embouchure and air support looked at by a good teacher.
The 993 is a rather unique model in being a compensator with a long leadpipe, so for some players this instrument may call for an adjusted approach.
