I used to run into Shep on breaks from the Your Father's Mustache in NYC - he drank at the Riviera, a joint across Seventh Avenue South (there's a health club on the site of the YFM today - ironic). He told me he played a four-valve Conn - I think he only got into the classics as far "NC-4 March" and "National Emblem" - but the stories about Wilbur Duckworth were great (they changed over the years depending on how Shep felt and how well he was riffing that night). BTW, he usually wouldn't admit he WAS Jean Shepard at first. That I was a tuba was what broke the ice. He used to have the Red Garter band (precursor to YFM) on his show (when he did it live from the Limelight, a joint down the street), later the Red Garter became Your Father's Mustache.

I think you can get the old radio shows from a website. I remember him fondly.
