These are my opinions on this topic. I have stated in the past that I have a list of items that I have ignored when choosing a tuba. On this list is how the tuba is finished. I focus on how the tuba sounds for me; or more to the point, how I hope it will sound when I get used to it. I am really not sure of how any finish effects sound, as I have yet to find two tubas that play identically. I am not going to strip lacquer off of a tuba that I like to do the experiment of which finish does what. As to if it suits a tuba, it suited Dave Bragunier in the National Symphony to have bare brass Alexanders. However, it may not be suitable for other groups.
