Should be drinking heavily AND PLAYING, eh? My own humble piece of advice is to pay attention to the mighty fine remasterings of the records from yesteryear. F.x. "McKinney's Cotton Pickers", Bennie Moten and Fletcher Henderson of the late 20's to 30's. It's early big band jazz, not traditional jazz/dixie, I know, but the tuba/sousaphone players in these band have their own rock bottom sound and sense of timing. I have great fun playing along these CDs on my sousa. I guess learnin' by doin' (and listenin') can be the start of something. A modern day alternative of very high standard (my absolute favourite playing old repertoire) is the swedish band "Kustbandet". Check them out also. And keep swingin'! (Not drinkin')
