Pete;

You may have actually heard Ellis' playing. He is currently the Principal Tubist with the Vancouver Symphony. But he was Prinicpal with the Montreal Symphony all through the '80's. All of those '80's recordings are him. If you haven't already checked those out, I have listed below, a few suggestions as to which CDs he sounds particularly amazing on. Ellis, in my view, has the ultimate orchestral sound: solid, big, rich, with enough middles and highs in the sound to make it come alive. Listen for yourself and see if you don't agree.

All CDs are on London Records with Dutoit conducting:

Tchaikovsky-Symphony No. 4
Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue, American in Paris, etc. (May be out of print)
Respighi- Pines, Fountains and Roman Festivals
Mussorgsky-Pictures at an Exhibition (played Bydlo on Euph, I believe)
Prokofiev-Symphonies Nos. 1 & 5

Enjoy!
