This is getting tangential, but I remember reading about the recording process for Sheffield's "The Moscow Sessions", using Dave Wilson's state-of-the-art Ultra Master tape recorder (1", analog, 2-track, 30 ips, 450KHz bias frequency, custom tube electronics, about 115 dB effective dynamic range), and with Keith O. Johnson doing the miking and engineering.

When they began the audio tests, the Moscow Philharmonic played at their standard recording dynamic level (mezzo forte for everything). It seems they had learned, over the years, how not to overstress the ancient recording electronics used by the State-owned Melodia. When Johnson told them to play with full concert dynamics, they responded with surprise and delight, and played with real passion. Their recording of Shostakovich's "A Festive Overture" either on CD or LP, is one of my standard, "goosebump test" pieces when evaluating stereo equipment.
