1) The boss (the director), in this case, is wrong.
2) The boss ain't always right, but he's always the boss.
However much you think you care about this rating, I promise your director cares more. I particularly think he's nuts to have a kid 'hold a tuba', thinking the judges will be faked out. My advice? Be glad that you don't have to be a part of that spectacle, and work like the dickens for solo & ensemble and all-region/area/state/province/whatever. In a couple of years no one will give a hoot what kind of high school band you played in, including you. Much luck.
