With all due respect, I think that Gary is half right, you will probably have to spend more than $600 for a used tuba. But there are often servicable horns on eBay for less than $1000. I got a dented and scratched 3/4 size BBb for $750. It looks fine if you're standing more than 20 feet away. And it plays great. The director of our little orchestra is thrilled to have a tuba, regardless of how it looks up close.
Skills developed on a "beater" tuba are not wasted when finances allow the move to a better horn.
