Thanks a lot for all of your input! Just to clear a few things up that were mentioned,
I am studying privately and have talked some of this over with my teacher, but overall,
my knowledge of these subjects is way behind my ability. I am a high school senior
considering majoring in performance in college and the tuba teacher at the
school I will be attending greatly favors CC tubas (I don't want to
plan to go somewhere else just yet because I'm not totally sure of my
major and this school is strong in my other academic interests). I have
heard that one source of a strong bias in that area can originate in
the number of valves. Also, if any of you could comment on the validity
of the argument that different ensembles require different types of
instruments, I would aprreciate it (I don't hear this about any other instruments, and due to prices of tubas, it seems like an unfortunate coincidence).
Finally, some of you seemed to think that I don't even need to spend $6,000
on an instrument. Is there not that big of a difference (even to a music
major) between $3,000 and $6,000?
Sorry to go on and on like this; I will definitely talk to my teacher
about all of this, and once again, I appreciate all of your comments.
