As a high-school student, it's understandable, but you are mistaken about players of other instruments using one instrument for different styles. Trumpets use Bb only for jazz and commercial music, but A, Bb, C, D and piccolo on classical reportoire. Trombones use small bore tenors for jazz, large-bore for classical. And how about guitars? You've got hollow-body electrics, solid-body electrics, acoustics, classicals, depending on the kind of music they are playing.

Look at it this way: some instruments don't really get to play more than one kind of music. We are fortunate to be able to play a fairly wide variety of music, and by doubling, we can play almost any style.

It IS important to note that you don't have to own more than one really good tuba to start out with. See the many posts about 'getting by' with one tuba.
