I don´t know what musical horizon do you have, your ears etc. first of all is it possible for you to sing or imagine the notes you´re playing do you really know the melodies you´re playin´? When I was a beginner I had the same problems. My advice go to the piano and play the etudes you want to study you will get an idea of it and then it must be much better even with the badest instrument. My first Tuba was also very old and bad but my Prof. played on it and it was a kind of magic everything sounded perfect so your problem is 70% in your head believe me
try to learn all intervalls so you can sing it up and down from each tone and in a few months your problems might disappear but work hard on your musical horizon. I hope my english is not so bad....
