I attended the TMEA (Texas version of the same conference) in San Antonio every February when I lived there. The all-state performances were free and open to the public, but the exhibit hall was limited to registered attendees. It was common practice to borrow an attendee's name badge to tour the exhibits. I was known to the Orpheus folks, and also to the owners of a large local music store. When they saw me on the exhibition floor, they would always say, "Hello, Ri--er--'Fred'." Once, I even had the name badge with what was clearly a female name on it, and nobody minded.

Seek out a friendly school band director who will let you spend a couple of hours in the show with his--or her--badge.
