Honestly I don't think it matters too much where you rest your left hand. In high school I played a King Bflat tuba with the pistons on the front of the horn. I used to keep my left hand on the highest part of the horn (not the acual bell). Since I've come to college I've learned that our first valve slide is our friend, so I have repositioned my left and to work it's way through the tubing so that I can control the first valve slide. All in all I think the best way to play your horn is to become as comforatable as possible while still maintaining correct posture. Don't inconvenience yourself by trying to make someone else happy just becuase they don't like where your hand is.

That's just my thought on it. Not a dumb question at all.
