I say go ahead and bring a book and a portable cd player... but not for use in basic. You'll get your possessions back at the end of basic as Andy said. You might want that stuff for the flight after basic, whether it be a flight home or to your next school.
As for Sean and his attempts at sleeping, I learned this trick on my third day. My drill sergeants thought I had a very weak stomach. After every meal I went to the can for about an hour. This is where I sat and slept much of my time away. I don't suggest doing this and walking away very fast. Its been 7+ years and I think I still have a ring around... too much information.
