There is a good picture of Mr. Jacobs - when a young man - holding the tuba. It was fairly obvious that it was in original condition. It had never been overhauled, had a satin finish, and had a tall keel on the bottom bow (not there now - probably dug into Mr. Jacobs' leg, or otherwise made the instrument uncomfortable to hold). That picture (I think) can be viewed in one of the OLD Tuba Journals. Perhaps someone will find it, scan it, and post it.

Take my word for it, one has to buff the "crap" out of a tuba to remove the satin finish. (The York no longer has a satin finish.) When I picked it up to play it, it was quite lightweight. Gene (rightfully so) always refers to it as "fragile".
