Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and you'll find proponents of each. Depending on who you ask, both work. My F tuba has a whole-tone fifth that I have no problems using.
One thing to consider: A long whole-tone slide is much easier to install than a short two-whole-tone branch, and can be built up from premade parts. The two-tone fifth will require more parts and more disassembly to install.
