First I've heard of the earlier part, but the later part as told to me by Mr. Jacobs was that Donatelli played at OU on his final tour with the Philadelphia Orchestra. An official of the music school asked Mr. Donatelli to look at a tuba the school had owned for a number of years, but was not being used by anyone (this is ca.1948/49). They wanted an appraisal. Donatelli told them something like "not too bad, I may have someone for you." He contacted Mr. Jacobs, who found the school officials ready for some hard bargaining. Without divulging the actual cost in dollar terms, he said he had to trade two tubas (BBb) for the one York. But, he felt if they had known it's real value, the bargaining would have been even harder.
