I asked Dwight Sullinger (Mexico City Philharmonic ) about this. He said that there is a tradition of virtuoso sousaphone and tuba playing in Mexico. Listen to any of the contemporary Ranchero music and you will hear tuba playing with big fat sounds and blazing technique. Apparently most of these guys are self taught and play by ear.
Anyway, Dwight feels that these players were the inspiration for Revueltas tuba parts.
