I play on a gold plated mouthpiece, but only because I was having the occasional reaction to silver. Actually I don't know if the reaction was to the silver, but once I switched to the gold I stopped getting the rash that I was getting. I had mine gold plated after buying it and the gold seems to be holding up well. I have heard that the factory plating on some is thinner and wears more quickly. I do also find that the gold feels slightly more slippery, but not enough to make much of a difference. In general, unless you know that you have a problem with silver against your skin, gold probably isn't worth it. If you do want gold I suggest buying a mouthpiece in silver and making sure that it is what you want before having it plated. It cost me $35 to have mine plated and took about two weeks, including shipping time.

This has been discussed many times, check the archives for more info.
