I'm just listening to the new Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Greatest Hits CD that came out yesterday and it occurs to me how easy it is to forget just how incredible John Fletcher was. He was the ideal combination of pure musicianship, total control of the instrument and wonderful sense of humor. He makes everything sound so easy...even the Bozza Sonatine. I have a feeling my CD player will be spinning non-stoop for quite a while with these recordings.
If you haven't already picked up a copy.....RUN to your nearby store and get one. Just listening to him play is like getting a lesson in itself! Much thanks to Joe Szurly and Universal Records for this much needed reminder of how great this brass ensemble (and tubist in particular) were. And thank you Richard for stocking so many copies in your store!
