Some professional symphony orchestras requesting a tape for the first round of auditions ask that the recording be made with the mike 7 feet up and around ten (but at least six) feet away. This is generally a pretty good guideline, but I find that the mike(s) positions largely depend on the room you're recording in. If you want to eliminate a lot of reverb, then the mikes are better off closer to you. This is especially helpful if you plan on modifying acoustics before you dump it onto tape. To pick up on reverb and get the acoustical benefits of a hall you really enjoy, place the mikes farther away. I say mikes because a stereo recording (IMO) makes a generally more satisfying, warmer sounding recording than in mono. Also, it leaves you with more options regarding mike placement.
