More: Your heading was called, "Auditions: Are They Real?". Ask yourself a different question: What is it that your adjudicators are looking for? - or more precisely, wanting to hear? They want to know how you're going to fit into their organization, and not necessarily if you're the greatest soloist on earth. Therefore, learn everything that you can about the organization that you're auditioning for. If possible, learn about the person that they're replacing - assuming that we're talking about a retirement situation, and not a firing because they played poorly. If it's a symphony orchestra that plays in huge modern hall, they may indeed may be wanting to hear the classic American 6/4 or big 5/4 type sound. If it's a military band, they may be more concerned with your agility; your short notes; accuracy (although that's always important), etc. You get the idea.
