If you think aobut the speed of sound and the speed of the air you are blowing and compare that to the 18 or so feet of tubing on a tuba, it becomes insignificant really quickly.

I have played BBb tubas that respond great. And CC. Likewise i hava played both BBb and CC horns that play like you are blowing into a hole in a tree (for lack of a more creative comparison).

I don't know what factors affect response, but I do know that Length IS NOT ALWAYS a factor. It may but sometimes, but not always. If a person who started on BBb with a responsive horn were to pick up one of the aforementioned CC's that sucks, he/she would in their mind forever prefer BBb over CC. Same thing the other way around.

The new King 2341(#?) is a perfect example. BBb. LOUD. Responsive. In tune. Yet longer tubing than a CC. And with a low register to make grown men weep ;-)
