When you immediately recognize - when listening to the tape - that you are speeding up and slowing down, even though you will find it somewhat disturbing you will also gain confidence because you will realize that you DO have a good enough sense of pulse to recognize flaws.
The next step will just be to superimpose your own live performance on your own good sense of pulse.
