Orchestral trumpet players routinely transpose from arbitrary written keys to arbitrary trumpet keys (there is even a book entitled "Have Trumpet, will Transpose"); advanced players often own and play trumpets in low D (valveless), A, Bb, C, D, Eb, piccolo F, piccolo G, piccolo A, and piccolo Bb.

Trombone players learn to read different clefs besides bass clef; trombone players such as Joe Alessi play trombones with different keys than Bb.

Cello players retune their strings to play such pieces as the Sarabande from Bach's fifth cello suite. Some bass players have an added, fifth string.

Guitar players often retune their strings for different pieces or styles.

There are many ways to approach the music and, perhaps, an exercise that stimulates the mind can help some to achieve a higher level of understanding of the music, work past a mental block, and play better, in general.
