I disagree with your last sentence. As a full-time musician (I guess that means professional) I have played with other full-time musicians who sometimes show up late, often don't nail their parts, don't play well in tune and yet maintain a full-time living as musicians.

One great musician who would not fit into your category of professional is Charles Ives who was criticized by full-time composers for not being a full-time musician. He made millions in the insurance business. He probably made more money from music than many "professional" musicians, yet he made the bulk of his income from his insurance business.
