If you're a performer, you should mimic as much as possible the circumstances that you'll be performing under. Sit in the same kind of chair, have a music stand in front of you, etc. This is after you've worked out the details of your piece, though. When working out details I get the passage memorized pretty quickly, and then I focus on how it feels to play it right. If I'm doing an exercise that I might be tempted to overdo a little, like working on my high range, I actually will sit in front of the TV because that keeps me from forcing things. (Not the best for everybody, probably, but it works for me.)
